"The IDF struck two terror targets in Gaza in response to rocket fire from the northern Gaza Strip that landed in Israeli territory and to an earlier launch that landed within the Gaza Strip", an IDF spokesman said.

There was no initial claim of responsibility from any militant groups in the Gaza Strip for the launchings.

The rockets came amid rising tensions in Gaza and the West Bank following U.S. President Trump's announcement that the U.S. recognizes Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

Later in the evening another launch was reported with rockets said to have fallen in open fields in Israeli territory.

The army also fired several missiles and shells into Palestinian lands, in borer areas of the Gaza Strip.

The Palestinian Authority called for a general strike in Palestinian cities as a result of Trump's declaration, while Hamas has taken a harder line and is advocating for a new Palestinian uprising.

Demonstrators in cities including Jerusalem, Bethlehem and Ramallah rallied against Trump's shift in policy, some burning American flags and photos of the US president.

Dozens of Palestinians in Gaza also staged violent protests along the security fence surrounding the coastal enclave, throwing rocks and rolling burning tires at the barrier and the Israeli soldiers on the other side.

Israel has occupied East Jerusalem since the 1967 Middle East war.
