Democratic Rep. John Conyers resigned from Congress on Tuesday after a almost 53-year career, becoming the first Capitol Hill politician to lose his job in the torrent of sexual misconduct allegations sweeping through the nation's workplaces.

From a hospital in Detroit, the 88-year-old congressman said he is endorsing his son, John Conyers III, to replace him.

The minority leader had spent a few days prior to November 26 working with Conyers and other Congressional Black Caucus members on how to "lay groundwork for him to step aside gracefully", the aide told NPR's Scott Detrow. The group declined last week to call for his resignation, pitting its members against House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., who said he must leave Congress. Another woman accused Conyers of sexual misconduct just days later. Court documents also revealed that another staffer in 2007 filed - and later dropped - a lawsuit against Conyers, claiming that the lawmaker sexually harassed her in 2015 and 2016, while she was working for him.

It will be up to Republican Gov. Rick Snyder to set a date for a special election to pick someone to serve out the remaining year in Conyers' two-year term.

At the time, Reed said that it would be up to Conyers, and not other politicians, whether he ended a almost 53-year-long career in Congress. Conyers - a figure who marched with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and employed Rosa Parks - was first elected in 1964.

Conyers regularly won elections with more than 80 percent of the vote.

MI state Sen. Ian Conyers, a grandson of John Conyers' brother, told The New York Times for a story Tuesday that he plans to run for the 13th District congressional seat.

Conyers admitted to making the settlement, but denied firing a female staffer for refusing his sexual advances.

A woman who received a $27,000 confidential settlement, Marion Brown, described to NBC's Today last week her accusations against Conyers.

Several women have accused the Michigan Democrat, who is the most senior member of Congress, of verbal abuse, inappropriate touching and groping over decades.

Conyers called the events leading to his early retirement "a game of politics", but said he and his family are taking what has happened in stride and they are dealing with it and will keep moving forward.

Elisa Grubbs made the allegation in an affidavit released by her attorney, Lisa Bloom. He sponsored the bill to declare Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday a national holiday, as well as the Alcohol Warning Label, National Voter Registration and Hate Crime Statistics acts.

Top Democrats, including Pelosi, have also called for. "They are not true and I think they are something that I can't explain where they came from".

The furor over Conyers unfolded as the sexual misconduct allegations against Franken and Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore sent members of both parties rushing to choose sides.
