  • Ali Abdullah Saleh former President of Yemen – obituary

The party of Yemen's former president and strongman Ali Abdullah Saleh on Monday confirmed that he has been killed.

The Houthi-run Masirah TV announced the death of the "leader of the traitors", referring to Saleh, who ruled the country for more than three decades, and up until last week was in a fragile alliance with the rebels.

Images circulating on social media showed Saleh's body cradled in a floral blanket, with what appeared to be a large head wound.

After he was forced from power in 2011, Saleh reemerged several years later as a militia leader, allying himself with the Iranian-allied Houthis and driving Yemen's internationally recognized government from power.

Saleh had previously been aligned with the Iran-aligned Houthi rebels before switching sides to an Saudi-led coalition in the country's blood-soaked civil war.

According to Al Arabiya, the GPC sources said that "Ali Abdullah Saleh was killed during clashes with the Houthis in the country's capital of Sana'a". Residents reported at least five air strikes shook the highlands of the area.

Yemen has since been rocked by rebel infighting.

The Houthis have also seized the homes of Saleh and some of his family members in a southern district of Sanaa - the so-called Political District - which witnessed some of the heaviest clashes.

Tribal sources in Saleh's hometown Sanhan, south of Sanaa, on Monday reported intense overnight fighting between the Houthis and Saleh loyalists.

Saleh announced the end of his alliance with the Houthis on Saturday.

The meeting aims to discuss ways to save Houthis and help them maintain their influences.

The stalemated war has killed more than 10,000 civilians and displaced 3 million.

The Houthi claim come as tensions soar between the insurgents and the Saudi-led coalition, which imposed a crippling blockade on Yemen in response to a Houthi missile that was intercepted near Riyadh airport on 4 November. Either Houthis will take full control of Sanaa or coalition & Hadi forces will push into city with full force in coordination with GPC.

It was a grisly end for a figure who was able to rule the impoverished and unstable country for more than three decades and remained a powerhouse even after he was ousted in a 2011 Arab Spring uprising.
