Ashley Young haunts Watford as Man United hold on to win

  • Ashley Young scored two superb goals against his former club as Manchester United beat Watford 4-2

Matic has started all 14 of Manchester United's Premier League contests this season since his €45 million move from Chelsea during the summer transfer window, providing one assist for Jose Mourinho's side.

Ashley Young is expecting a hard night when Manchester United face his former club Watford on Tuesday night.

Young, a product of Watford's academy, scored with a half-volley and a free kick before Anthony Martial added a third.

Watford made it a nervy finish for the Red Devils at the death after second-half goals from Troy Deeney and Abdoulaye Doucoure. Before those successive victories they had gone down to three straight losses in what was by far their most disappointing run of the season so far. 32-year-old Ashley Young has been the club's first choice left back in recent weeks, with Luke Shaw, Matteo Darmian and Daley Blind seemingly not fancied by the Portuguese, and likely to be allowed to leave the club in the near future.

The English full-back has been in stunning form for the Red Devils and looked fired up as he took on his former club.

United slowly grew into the game, although they struggled to link up with Romelu Lukaku.

Doucoure was booked for fouling Paul Pogba and Young clinically dispatched a 25-yard free-kick with unerring accuracy.

However, José Mourinho's side drew first blood in the 19th minute as Young rifled his half-volley into the bottom corner from just outside the box.

Christian Kabasele did not get enough purchase on a clearing header and Lukaku intelligently volleyed the ball into the path of Martial, who adroitly steered a low shot past Heurelho Gomes.

It should have been even worse for Watford at the break, but Gomes saved well from Lukaku before jumping to his feet to make an even better stop from Lingard's follow-up effort.

He whistled another shot inches wide before Watford went up the other end to win a penalty as Rojo brought down substitute Roberto Pereyra, Deeney converting having only just come off the bench himself.
