Massage Envy facing allegations of sexual assault at numerous locations

  • In many cases women who complained to Massage Envy management about an alleged assault said they were stonewalled

Dozens of people have accused massage therapists of sexual misconduct at Massage Envy, according to a BuzzFeed report.

Massage Envy therapists faced sexual harassment allegations from more than 180 women, BuzzFeed reported its investigation revealed.

"But a review by BuzzFeed News found the company's policies on reporting improper conduct do more to protect the company brand than to ensure customer complaints are handled appropriately".

In one case, Susan Ingram described how massage therapist James Deiter at Massage Envy in West Chester, Pennsylvania, sexually assaulted her in 2015.

The most disturbing part, like many stories of sexual assault that have come to light over the past several weeks, is the swiftness with which Massage Envy reportedly tried to sweep the reports under the rug. Massage Envy - which has more than 1,100 franchises in 49 states, according to its website - dubbed the reported incidents "heartbreaking" in a company statement obtained by AFP. "These occurred over a span of 15 plus years and 125 million massages".

As for Ingram, she is suing Massage Envy and taking other steps to make sure spa companies do the right thing.

"Ingram lay there, frozen in fear and disbelief, until the session was over", the report said.

"I wanted to thank you again for being among the first to start raising awareness about this issue", she said in an email this morning to The Times-Dispatch.

"She said in a very apparently scripted response, 'We invite you in to talk about your services.' And I said, 'No, no, no you don't understand."
I was like, "Oh s-t!'" said one woman who declined to give her name as she left a session at the 63rd Street spa Monday morning.

She helped draft federal legislation that would require massage spas to report sexual assault allegations to police.

There are more than 1,100 total Massage Envy locations serving over 1.5 million members. "That's why we will never stop reinforcing to our franchisees the importance of a safe environment".

Even if a client calls to report a rape, Massage Envy is not required to contact law enforcement. "We are constantly listening, learning and looking at how we can do more, including how we support franchised locations with best practices in handling these incidents and supporting their clients".
