Tennesseans react to potential head coach shift to Greg Schiano

  • White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders blasts UT over Greg Schiano reports

VolQuest.com is reporting that multiple sources have confirmed that Tennessee is "close" to a deal that would make Greg Schiano the Volunteers' next head football coach.

According to USA Today's Dan Wolken, the Vols are finalizing a deal with former Bucs and Rutgers coach Greg Schiano, now on staff at Ohio State, with the announcement expected later on Sunday.

Testimony unsealed from former Penn State assistant coach Mike McQueary in a deposition indicated that another former Penn State assistant told McQueary that Schiano had seen former Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky "doing something to a boy in the shower". His best year as a head coach came in 2006 when Rutgers went 11-2.

After firing Butch Jones earlier this season, the Tennessee Volunteers have been taking part in a national search for a replacement.

Tennessee (4-8, 0-8 SEC) ended its season Saturday with a 42-24 loss to Vanderbilt. Rutgers had not been to a bowl game since 1978 when Schiano took the job. The question is whether Schiano is the right culture fit for the Vols, but if Tennessee wasn't able to lure in the top names on the possible coaching market like Dan Mullen (apparently headed to Florida), Chip Kelly (signed on with UCLA), Scott Frost (likely headed to Nebraska or staying at UCF), and with Gruden always being a pipe dream, Schiano isn't a awful hire like many will say.

Schiano developed a relationship with Currie when he was out of coaching for two seasons following his short tenure in Tampa. After he was sacked, he latched on with Ohio State, where he has served as defensive coordinator the past two seasons.

Schiano worked at Penn State from 1990 to 1995, first as a graduate assistant and then as defensive backs coach.
