David Cassidy, the actor and teen heartthrob best known for his role as the musician with the green eyes and the feathered haircut on the 1970s television sitcom "The Partridge Family", died Tuesday.
Cassidy entered a hospital over the weekend for treatment of liver failure. David died surrounded by those he loved, with joy in his heart and free from the pain that had gripped him for so long. "Thank you for the abundance and support you have shown him these many years", his publicist, Jo-Ann Geffen, said in a statement. He is survived by his two children, Jones, and his half-brothers, Shaun, Patrick and Ryan Cassidy. He had revealed earlier this year that he was suffering from dementia. His comments came days after a video showing him slurring his words, forgetting lyrics and falling onstage at a Los Angeles show went viral. Cassidy has had numerous personal problems in the decades following his initial success, ranging from substance abuse to bankruptcy.
Cassidy's entrails remained off the market, but for several years his likeness was emblazoned on posters, push-out cards, colouring books and lunch boxes, as the band he led on TV - the Partridge Family, a true family outfit that featured his stepmother Shirley Jones - became one of the decade's defining pop music acts, beloved by a mostly female audience and derided by critics who heard only bubble-gum blandness.
Cassidy rose to prominence playing wholesome Keith Partridge on the ABC television series "The Partridge Family".
The series ran from 1970 to 1974 and turned Cassidy into a star with hordes of adoring fans.
Some of his most famous songs include Cherish, Could It Be Forever, How Can I Be Sure, and Daydreamer. That led to his own cop show vehicle, the short-lived David Cassidy: Man Undercover, which was cancelled in 1979.
He earned his wealth from his acting roles in the 70s and his hit songs that placed him firmly in the teen idol hall of fame. "I have an image of myself in five years. By the 1980s I was broke and had to rebuild my life", he told the Telegraph in an interview earlier this year. Between 2010 and 2014, he was arrested several times on charges related to drunk driving, and entered rehab multiple times.
