Organizers say the need is great, but they're inspired by so many willing to help.

The Salvation Army in Springfield served 255 people here at Harbor House today for their annual community Thanksgiving lunch. She's already getting a good response; the agency is farther along for volunteer bell ringing signups than this time previous year.

Tabay, the sole surviving member of 13 original Filipino who signed up to serve during World War II, said he waited a long time before learning that he would be the recipient of the Congressional Medal.

Now, the Army assists more than 4.5 million people during the holiday season, thanks in part to kettle donations. Lanier said that without the help of the businesses to allow the kettles and the volunteers on their property - and that bell-ringing - it wouldn't happen.

"Thanksgiving is just the beginning of our work in the community", he said. "End result is that we have an opportunity for everyone to give back in one place on Thanksgiving Day".

During the week immediately before Christmas they'll be out every day.

Lilly Lindsey, 10, said, "I love helping the community".
