Transport for London has recently been trying to use more biofuel in an attempt to reduce pollution in the city and it is also reportedly putting a fuel made from cooking oil on trial. Shell and bio-bean believe that waste can be turned into B20 biofuel to power a third of London's bus networks.
The project, which is in collaboration with Shell and Argent Energy, makes the biofuel through blending fats and oils, producing 20% biocomponent, which is then mixed with mineral diesel.
The company has produced 6,000 liters of coffee oil for the pilot project with London's transportation authority - enough to help power the equivalent of one city bus for a year.
Coffee grounds are now being used to produce biofuel for London buses, it has been confirmed. Once processed, the fuel source can be used on London buses without needing to modify the engine.
Sinead Lynch, Shell's United Kingdom country chair, said: "We're pleased to be able to support bio-bean to trial this innovative new energy solution which can help to power buses, keeping Londoners moving around the city - powered in part by their waste coffee grounds".
The announcement said that by decreasing emissions, the new B20 biofuel supplies a cleaner and sustainable energy solution to buses.
With the average Londoner drinking 2.3 cups of coffee a day, more than 200,000 tonnes of waste is produced that would otherwise end up in landfill.
A company called Bio-Bean has found a way to power one of the world's busiest transit systems with spent coffee grounds.
"A good idea can come from anywhere, but with the scale and commitment of Shell, we can help enable true progress", said Lynch in a company statement. The firm believes it would take just over 2.55 million cups of coffee to create the enough biofuel to run a London bus for a year once the oil has been blended with diesel.
