  • US model Gigi Hadid had excitedly announced her participation in the Shanghai Victoria's Secret fashion show in August

"Victoria's Secret will not have a response", a spokeswoman told the Associated Press by email.

Top model Gigi Hadid backed out of the show following allegations that she "discriminated" against Chinese people.

Razek denied that the event was turning into a "media crisis". Katy Perry, who was slated to sing at the show, won't be able to make it to Shanghai, either.

Gigi Hadid and Katy Perry will not be appearing at a Victoria's Secret fashion show in Shanghai later this month amid political and race rows.

Hadid, who was number five on Forbes' list of the world's highest-paid female models a year ago, earning $9 million, had expressed her participation in the show in August. It was speculated that she was unable to get her visa after a video of her squinting her eyes while holding up a Buddha cookie resurfaced when she announced that she would be headed to Shanghai.

Perry was set to perform at the event but was turned away for waving the Taiwanese flag during a 2015 concert in Taipei.

The clip was posted by the model's sister, Bella, in February and later deleted following a storm of criticism.

A Victoria's Secret spokesman declined comment when asked by AFP whether Hadid pulled out on her own, was asked to by the company, or whether Chinese authorities applied any pressure.

But Hadid isn't the only model facing setbacks. Hadid didn't share any other details but she could be among one of the few models who weren't able to obtain Chinese Visas to make the trip, including Julia Belyakova, Kate Grigorieva and Irina Sharipova from Russian Federation, as well as Dasha Khlystun from Ukraine.

Now, Harry will be bumping into a few of his rumoured flings who have been cast in this year's show including New Zealand model Georgia Fowler and Austrian model Nadine Leopold.

Victoria's Secret has a dark history of being accused of cultural appropriation in its annual fashion show.
