  • Hamilton Heights fire engulfs roof of apartment building

Over 200 New York City Fire Department firefighters responded to a devastating 5 alarm fire at an apartment building located at Broadway and West 144 Street, Manhattan on Friday afternoon.

Fierce winds spread the fire quickly, fireballs of debris raining down on the street and a thick wall of black smoke shooting into the skyline shortly after it broke out on the top floor around 3:15 p.m.

A massive fire has broken out at an apartment building in NY.

Two people have reportedly suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Heavy smoke and orange flames could be seen pouring through the building's roof, with strong wind making the blaze hard to contain.

According to Zillow.com, the residential building was built in 1918.

Some witnesses told PIX11 that sections of the building's facade are falling to the street below.

CBS2's Dave Carlin reported firefighters were making progress as winds started to die down.

As of 5pm (local time), the fire was not under control, according to officials at the scene, the Daily Mail reported. "A lot of the roof is burned away and we still have very heavy fire and smoke". Emergency workers evacuated the burning building and the nearby buildings as a precaution.

He said firefighters would enter the building to search for the missing tenant as soon as it was deemed safe.

Residents are unsure of what the future holds, and many have lost their homes before the holiday season begins.
