Topeka's unemployment rate fell to 2.9 percent in October, down four-tenths of a point in September and down a full percentage point compared with October 2016.

That shows an unemployment rate of 3.6% in October of 2017, down from 4.3% in October 2016. The October unemployment rate was four-tenths of a percentage point lower than the national rate of 4.1% reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. "This grew the labor force and factored into the unemployment rate dropping to 3.6 percent, the lowest it has been since August 2000".

She says apprenticeships have helped millions of people develop skills needed for good jobs. Over the year, employment was up 1,000 while unemployment shrank by 58,000 from last October.

The unemployment rate is the lowest since January 2001. Only Hawaii, at 2.2 percent, and North Dakota, at 2.5 percent, had lower rates. The last time the rate was 4.7 percent was in November 2007.

The rate drop reflected a decline in the number of unemployed Iowans to about 51,000 in October.

Pennsylvania's nonfarm jobs count was down 4,300 from September's record high level to 5,973,800 in October.

Government employment, at 772,600, increased by 3,300 positions.
