  • Rainbow celebrations as Australians vote for same-sex marriage

Australians have voted in support of same-sex marriage - and Hollywooders are applauding the decision.

From Kylie Minogue and Sia, to Danni Minogue and Troye Sivan, we've rounded up a selection of the reactions below.

A jubilant Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said Parliament needs to "get on with it" and pass the same sex marriage bill by Christmas.

Supporters of the same-sex marriage "Yes" vote gather to celebrate the announcement in a Sydney park on November 15, 2017.

"They voted yes for fairness, yes for commitment, yes for love".

The Australian Bureau of Statistics said on Tuesday 61.6 percent of voters cast their ballots in support of same-sex marriage.

Almost 80 per cent of eligible voters took part in the poll, said the chief of the statistics bureau Davis Kalisch, adding: "Australians can have confidence these statistics reflect the view of the eligible population". If you're anxious about religious freedom, and freedom of speech, vote no.

"They (Australians) have spoken in their millions and they have voted overwhelmingly yes for marriage equality", Turnbull told reporters in Canberra.

"It's a g'day. Way to go Australia", tweeted U.S. TV host Ellen DeGeneres, who is married to Australian actress Portia de Rossi in the United States. The committee called on Australia to legislate for marriage equality regardless of the survey's outcome.

"After all of this, if we end up with the Senate voting for marriage equality and the Reps voting for a different form of marriage equality and nothing happening as a result, I don't think the Australian people would be in a forgiving mood".

While Smith bill already allows churches to refuse to Wednesday same-sex couples, the Paterson bill would have allowed anyone with a religious or moral objection to refuse to participate in the process - including florists, bakers and musicians.

Attorney-General George Brandis said he would support an amendment that allowed civil celebrants - as well as religious celebrants - to refuse to marry same-sex couples.
