Zimbabwe ruling party condemns "treasonous" military chief statement

"When it comes to matters of protecting our revolution, the military will not hesitate to step in", Chiwenga told a press conference on Monday.

Although the ruling ZANU-PF party has said it would never succumb to military pressure.

Earlier this year the country was gripped by a weird spat between Grace and Mnangagwa that included an alleged ice-cream poisoning incident that laid bare the pair's rivalry.

Speculation has been rife in Harare that Mugabe could seek to remove Chiwenga, who is seen as an ally of ousted Mnangagwa.

"As a result of the squabbling, there has been no meaningful development in the country for the past five years". "The resultant economic impasse has ushered in more challenges to the Zimbabwean populace such as cash shortages and rising commodity prices", he said.

Chiwenga's statement was outrageous and calculated to disturb national peace and stability, party spokesperson Simon Khaya Moyo said in a statement.

"Further, we note with concern the attempts by some politicians to drive a wedge between the security services for their own selfish interests".

Despite the reports of the tanks, Zimbabwe's ruling party Zanu PF took to Twitter to deny rumours of a coup.

Zimbabwe's ruling party described criticism of its conduct by armed forces commander Constantine Chiwenga as "treasonable" and meant to incite insurrection in the southern African nation, deepening the split between the military and 93-year-old President Robert Mugabe.

Mnangagwa is now in self-imposed exile.

Political analysts however say the military stayed quiet then because the beneficiary of Mujuru's downfall was the 75-year-old Mnangagwa, a war veteran.

"Chiwenga threw down the gauntlet to Mugabe.it would make sense for Chiwenga to organise some military manoeuvres to up the ante".

"The current purging. targeting members of the party with a liberation background must stop forthwith".

Chiwenga said what was happening in the ruling party was a result of machinations of counter revolutionaries who have infiltrated the party to destroy it from within.

Ninety-three year old President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe is in trouble.

Mnangagwa had always been tipped as Mugabe's most likely successor but has in recent months increasingly come into conflict with first lady Grace Mugabe, who is vying to replace the 93-year-old president.
