Religious bias motivated 1,538 hate crimes a year ago - over half against Jews, and about one-quarter against Muslims.

Crimes motivated by bias against sexual orientation accounted for 1,076 incidents reported. The numbers show a 15.2 increase from 2015's hate crimes, when 18.2 percent of racial hate crimes (789 total) were done over "anti-white bias", the 2015 Federal Bureau of Investigation report said.

The law center and other watchdog groups have blamed the spike in extremist groups and hate speech to the divisive presidential election past year. "They not only hurt one victim, but they also intimidate and isolate a victim's whole community and weaken the bonds of our society".

According to the agency's annual Hate Crime Statistics released Monday, 39 hate crimes were reported in the state in 2016, down five from 2015.

The FBI's report was consistent with a report released earlier this year by a civil rights group that found an apparent increase in the number of anti-Muslim hate groups this past year.

"Anti-Black or African American bias" still make up the overwhelming cases of racial hate crimes in America. There were 307 crimes against Muslims in 2016, up from 257 in 2015, which at the time was the highest number since the aftermath of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

"It's deeply disturbing to see hate crimes increase for the second year in a row", Anti-Defamation League CEO Jonathan A. Greenblatt said in a statement, according to The Washington Post. Anti-white incidents increased from 613 incidents in 2015 to 720 incidents in 2016.

Maryland State Police report not just hate "crimes", but also "incidents", which could include things such as intimidation, which may not be considered a crime.

Data from California State University at San Bernardino indicate that hate crime has continued to rise in major US cities in 2017.
