An aide to Putin, Yuri Ushakov, said that "right now the time of the meeting is being agreed".

"Here is what worries me: the Olympics start in February, and when are our presidential elections?"

"President Putin is ready for that and the Americans know that".

The U.S. and Russian presidents are set to meet Friday at an worldwide economic summit in Vietnam, a Kremlin aide confirmed Thursday.

Relations between Moscow and Washington have plummeted as a U.S. probe has accused Trump's former campaign aides of secretly meeting Kremlin-connected officials. "There are very big suspicions that all this is being done to create an atmosphere of discontent among sports fans and athletes that is necessary for someone, that the state was allegedly implicated in violations and it is responsible for this", Putin told workers of the Chelyabinsk compressor plant.

Russian Federation has repeatedly denied allegations of interfering in the United States election past year that brought Trump to power.

In September, after the World Anti-Doping Agency dismissed 95 cases of suspected Russian doping, citing lack of evidence, the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency and 16 other national anti-doping organizations demanded Russia still be banned from next year's Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea.

Putin is also concerned about turnout in the March 2018 elections, Gabuev said.

The four were named in the McLaren report last December, which alleges that a state-sponsored doping programme existed in Russian Federation between 2011 and 2015. The investigation said the cheating peaked at the 2014 Winter Olympics in the Black Sea resort of Sochi, where Russian secret agents engineered an elaborate system of doping.

In his remarks Thursday, Putin implied that the United States held undue leverage over the International Olympic Committee through sponsorships, broadcasting rights and advertising.
