Climbing barred on Australia's famed Uluru rock to 'right historic wrong'

  • Specialist climbers rescued three men who became stuck atop Uluru after climbing the landmark The Northern Territory 2016

The director of the Central Land Council, David Ross, described the vote as "righting a historic wrong" and said the rock is "not a theme park like Disneyland".

After over 70 years of tourism, Uluru will be off limits for climbers from October 2019, local authorities have confirmed.

Climbing Uluru will be banned from October 2019, after the board of the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park unanimously agreed to prohibit climbers.

Signs at the start of the climb ask people to abstain from going up in respect to the traditional law of the Anangu Aboriginal people, the custodians of the land.

He said the Anangu people had felt intimidation over the years to keep the climb open because it was a top tourist attraction, but they wanted to close it because of its cultural significance.

Figures from Parks Australia indicated only 16 per cent of visitors to the park made the climb between 2011 and 2015, down from about 74 per cent in the 1990s.

Parks Australia says more than 250,000 people visit the park each year. We welcome tourists here. "Please don't hold us to ransom", a traditional owner of Uluru, Sammy Wilson, said.

The entirety of Uluru is a sacred area and the site where the climb begins is also a sacred men's area.

According to Parks Australia, the climb is the traditional route taken by Mala on their arrival at Uluru, and the path is of great significant to Anangu.

In addition to being incredibly disrespectful, climbing Uluru is often risky, and has led to a number of deaths over the years.

It also warns of the dangers of climbing Uluru, including that many have died while scaling the rock.
