The first charges have been filed in the ongoing special counsel investigation into possible Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, CNN is reporting.

"Plans were prepared Friday for anyone charged to be taken into custody as soon as Monday", sources reportedly told CNN.

It's unclear who has been charged and what those charges are.

Sources familiar with Mueller's investigation said he has used that broad authority to investigate links between Trump aides and foreign governments as well as possible money laundering, tax evasion and other financial crimes. Former FBI Director James Comey led the investigation until Trump fired him in May amid significant controversy.

A spokesman for the special counsel's office declined to comment to CNN.

Mueller's team has conducted extensive interviews with former White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus, former spokesperson Sean Spicer and other current and former White House officials.

Congressional investigations into alleged Russian involvement in the presidential election are also underway.

Paul Manafort headed Trump's campaign for president for just a few months, but played a crucial role in delegate counting at the Republican National Convention, making sure that Trump secured the Republican nomination on the first ballot, avoiding a floor fight and the possibility that the nomination could have gone to an Establishment-friendly candidate - not Trump. Flynn was forced to resign in February, 24 days into his appointment, after it was revealed that he lied to Vice President Mike Pence about conversations he had with Russia's ambassador to the U.S., Sergey Kislyak.

Mueller's investigation also includes an effort to determine whether Trump or any of his aides tried to obstruct justice.

Mueller was appointed as the special counsel in May.

However, reports of charges being filed appear to signal that Mueller means business and the investigation will likely continue well into 2018. Reuters later confirmed the report. They did not win a contract.

Mueller's broad mandate gives him not only oversight of the Russian Federation probe, but also "any matters that arose or may arise directly from the investigation".
