Study offers troubling information about baby food products

  • Baby food products — including 80% of infant formulas — tested positive for arsenic according to the findings from a new study released Wednesday

There's a health alert for parents.

Two-thirds of baby food in the United States has tested positive for arsenic and other unsafe toxins, according to a new study.

The Clean Label Project study of 530 baby products also found that 36 percent of the products contained lead, 58 percent cadmium and 10 percent acrylamide. In this research it was found that 89 percent of grape juice samples, 86 percent of sweet potatoes samples and 47 percent of teething biscuits samples contained detectable levels of lead. However, we don't know how much was found in any product, because while The Clean Label Project has ranked the products in an infographic on its site, the organization has not released any specific data. Plus, 60% of products claiming to be "BPA free" tested positive for the industrial chemical bisphenol A. The quantities of contaminates range, but some products tested positive for up to 600 parts of arsenic per billion. Arsenic, a toxin associated with cardiovascular conditions, developmental defects, diabetes, neurotoxicity, skin lesions, and even cancer, was present in almost 80 percent of infant formulas.

And over 35 percent of infant formula had some levels of lead.

A list of the all the products tested and their ratings can be found on the Clean Label project website.

Five-hundred baby food products were tested.

The researchers also found that mainstream brands, which include Enfamil, Gerber, Plum Organics, and Sprout, were among the worst offenders that scored two out of five in the report card for toxic metals.

Arsenic does have the potential to be toxic but, as the World Health Organization explains, it is "a natural component of the earth's crust and is widely distributed throughout the environment in the air, water and land". While most samples contained only trace amounts of the toxins, some exceeded the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommendations by up to six times.

Arsenic in rice cereals is not surprising. There are strict regulations on lead, though many experts think those need updating because no amount of lead is safe.

"The baby industry needs to do a better job in protecting America's most vulnerable population", Bowen said.
