  • DEA prepares for Prescription Drug Take Back Day

This initiative addresses the public safety and public health issues that surround medications languishing in home cabinets, becoming highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse.

In last April's Drug Take-Back, people around the country turned in 450 tons of prescription drugs. The most recent National Survey on Drug Use and Health indicates that prescription medicines are the most abused drugs by Americans, next to marijuana.

Veterinary drugs will be accepted, but the sheriff's office can not accept inhalers, needles or other sharp objects.

"I mean just here at the Laurel Police Department we've collected approximately 600 pounds [of prescription drugs] over the times we've done [the take-back event]", said Cox.

Experts say more people start down the path of addiction through the misuse of prescription drugs than with any other substance and those stats are reflected in Idaho.

In Orangeburg, the Tri-County Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse is working with the Orangeburg County Sheriff's Office on a collection effort to be held from 10 a.m.to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Piggly Wiggly on Old Edisto Drive.

If you don't see a location near you, you can check the Drug Enforcement Administration's website for other options. "The study shows that a majority of abused prescription drugs were obtained from family and friends, often from the home medicine cabinet".

"The drop off box is available during normal business hours, 8 a.m.to 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday or by calling 744-7560 or 911 if it is after hours, and we can let you in to drop off the meds", said Eveleth Police Chief Tim Koivunen.

Gonzales Police Department will get a makeover October 31 and be turned into a Haunted Police Department for youth to stop by and trick or treat if they dare.

There are many other locations that accept prescription and over-the-counter drugs. "It is also a medication and narcotic disposal program", explained Swanson.

Items that may be disposed of in proper provided containers include: used and unused sharps.
