  • Malaysia, N. Korea to play AFC Asian Cup qualifying matches at neutral venue

Before the match, Indian Men's Hockey team Chief Coach Sjoerd Marijne said that the team is focused on improving their performance from their previous outing where they beat Pakistan 3-1 in the Pool stage.

Second-placed Malaysia took their points tally to four after playing out a 1-1 draw against South Korea, who collected three points in total.

But the day belonged to Malaysia, as a 59th minute penalty corner goal from Faizal Shaari was enough to play against India Sunday.

Coming into the match against Pakistan, India, despite having four points, were not guaranteed of a place in the final.

The game lacked pace in the first quarter as India started on defensive mode, while Pakistan were sloppy and failed to produce any real threat even after winning three penalty corners in the opening quarter.

In their last face-off, India won 3-1 against Pakistan. The second quarter saw both the teams looking for an opening as India came close to scoring their first goal of the match but Harmanpreet's shot hit the bar and the score remained goalless at the end of the second quarter.

The two top teams of the group will qualify for the 2019 AFC Asian Cup, scheduled to be held in the United Arab Emirates from January 5 to February 1, 2019. SK Uthappa scored the third goal for India in the 24th minute.

It was then Satbir who handed India an advantage in the third quarter.

However, in the 60th minute, Sardar Singh pulled off a spectacular reverse shot as India finished the match 6-2.

India started the fourth quarter aggressively as Varun Kumar missed a chance to score when Gurjant Singh found him in the circle with a calculated pass in the 46th minute. But India also won a penalty corner in the 14th minute which was scuffed by drag-flicker Harmanpreet Singh.

Shambolic defending or just an Indian comeback, call it what you want, the spoils very clearly go to India in this particular encounter.
