LOCATED? Experts have found three areas where the plane most likely crashed

A tripartite committee of Malaysia, Australia and China made a decision to suspend the search in January and refused to undertake any further operations unless investigators looking into the flight's disappearance had a more precise location.

Malaysia has chosen to negotiate terms with US-based seabed exploration firm Ocean Infinity to continue the search for the missing MH370 aircraft.

However late a year ago the Minister for Infrastructure, Darren Chester, said any resumption of the search required precise identification of the final resting place of the wreckage.

Once the negotiation was completed and the terms and conditions agreed upon with the "Ocean Infinity", he said the Malaysian Government would seek an agreement from the governments of Australia and China to proceed with the search for Flight MH370, in the spirit of tripartite cooperation.

The Australia Transport Safety Bureau has led the search efforts, since the plane is believed to have crashed in its jurisdiction.

Malaysia Airlines' Flight 370 that was flying from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing disappeared from radar screens on March 8, 2014, with 239 people on board. Its conclusion said the location of MH370 could not be pinpointed, despite a large-scale search of about 300,000 square miles of ocean.

In August, when Ocean Infinity first tabled the offer, it declined to reveal the exact terms of the proposal, but said in an email at the time to CNN that it was willing to "take on the economic risk of a renewed search".

"While I am hopeful of a successful search, I'm conscious of not raising hopes for the loved ones of those on board", Chester said.

Malaysia, Australia and China announced they were suspending the operation in January, almost three years after the plane disappeared. Some debris definitively linked to the plane has been found, but for the most part its whereabouts remains a mystery.

"No new information has been discovered to determine the specific location of the aircraft, however data collected during the previous search will be provided".

The ATSB issued its final report on the search earlier this month.

The aircraft was thought to have been diverted thousands of miles off course out over the southern Indian Ocean before crashing about 2,000km off the coast of Western Australia.
