Settlement reached in United Airlines incident in Chicago

  • A computer system glitch caused thousands of United Airlines flights throughout major airports to be grounded Wednesday morning. The issue was resolved by late morning with some ripple delays still being felt at airports throughout the country

Dao suffered a concussion, a broken now and lost two teeth in the scuffle.

In light of the damning report, the Department of Aviation made a decision to terminate a security officer who allegedly "improperly escalated" the April 9 incident and the sergeant accused of redacting facts from an employee report, according to the local paper.

The dragging incident was captured on video and quickly went viral on social media, sparking widespread outrage and prompting a number of congressional hearings.

As CrimeOnline previously reported, officers were recorded dragging Dr. David Dao, 69, off a flight after he refused to give up a seat he paid for.

The identities of the four officers were not revealed in Ferguson's report. After initially defending the flight crew's decision to have Dao forcefully removed, United CEO Oscar Munoz publicly apologized for the incident, and vowed the airline never again would have police remove a paid customer from a plane if passengers won't give up their seats voluntarily when United crew members need to get on a plane.

First calling the passenger "disruptive and belligerent" and claiming that the flight was overbooked, the airline later conceded that the flight was not actually overbooked.

The three officers involved in the incident and an aviation sergeant were placed on administrative leave after the incident.

Two other officers, one who "made misleading statements in two reports" and another who "made material omissions in a report", were suspended for five days each, prompting one of them to resign.

"Do not state something that is clearly contrary to video viewed by the world", Demetrio said.

Thomas Demetrio, Dao's attorney, said video evidence is what doomed the officers. The other officers were suspended. But for the video, the filed report stating that only "minimal" force was used would have been unnoticed.

Chicago aviation officials said the firings occurred in August.

He urged Evans to "fully consider the serious issues identified" in his quarterly report during that review to make certain aviation security officers and their bosses "have a clear and consistent understanding of their roles and responsibilities-individually and in relation to CPD and other airport personnel".
