Google Maps Drops Calorie-Counting Feature After Twitter Backlash

  • Google Maps received harsh criticism for a new calorie-counting feature that measured how many mini-cupcakes you would burn off by walking

The feature on the Google Maps for iOS measured calories in the form of desserts like one mini cupcake that equals 110 calories.

Google would estimate the number of calories users could burn-off by walking whenever they planned a route within the Google Maps app.

While the feature was not groundbreaking in innovation, having been built into other mapping apps such as Citymapper for a while, Google googl has had such "strong user feedback" that the calorie estimator will no longer appear in Google Maps for iOS, according to TechCrunch.

In an apparent effort to encourage people to walk rather than drive, Google Maps started showing alternative walking directions when short driving directions were requested, complete with a note on how many calories you'd burn during the walk. So, if you went to get directions for a 2.2-mile journey, Google would tell you that walking the route "burns around 199 calories - that's nearly 2 mini cupcakes!". "It was a test feature for iPhone users only, and will be removed later tonight from the app". However, it does not clarify the standard for an "average" person. Users also pointed out that the information could be triggering for people with eating disorders.

"During its mission, Cassini recorded and sent almost half a million pictures back to Earth, allowing scientists to reconstruct these distant worlds in unprecedented detail", Google Product Manager Stafford Marquardt wrote in a blog post. Maybe, Google can bring the feature back with alterations such as giving an option to disable the calorie estimate. The decision followed a wave of attention on social media; while some of the responses saw Google's feature as promoting exercise, there were several complaints that it was unsafe or insulting. "Now you can visit these places-along with many other planets and moons-in Google Maps right from your computer".
