Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte has declared the southern city of Marawi liberated after almost five months under Islamic State control.

President Rodrigo Duterte and security analysts say Hapilon has been a key figure in the jihadist outfit's drive to establish a Southeast Asian caliphate as they suffer battlefield defeats in Iraq and Syria. Officials said that Isnilon Hapilon, who is listed among the FBI's most-wanted terror suspects, and Omarkhayam Maute were killed in a gunbattle and their bodies were found Monday in Marawi.

He said the 4ID is in close coordination with the Armed Forces of the Philippines' Western Mindanao Command for any intelligence update regarding the movement and presence of the remaining insurgents.

Security officials believe Hapilon's death is significant, considering he was the uniting factor in Marawi, and that the blow to the global terror network is also serious, especially since the he was named by Daesh as emir of Southeast Asia.

However, AFP Chief of Staff General Eduardo Año stressed in a press briefing in Marawi, also on Tuesday, assured that just because the battle is near its end, it does not mean that there will be a "letup" in their operations.

The head of the Prelature of Marawi believes the reported death of terrorist leaders Isnilon Hapilon and Omar Maute will pave the way to the end of the conflict in the city.

"We will announce the termination of hostilities in a couple of days", Lorenzana added, referring to the months' long siege. DNA tests will be carried out on the two bodies because of the reward offer from the USA and Philippine governments, Lorenzana said. Defence chiefs last month said other Philippine militant leaders had been killed in the battle for Marawi.

Maute was the leader of the Maute group, which was founded by him and his brother Abdullah. Around 100 civilians, including hostages and families of the militants, are also trapped there, Brawner added.

The siege, which lasted nearly five months destroyed much of the city's once popular center and left more than 400,000 people from Marawi and elsewhere living in temporary shelters. The restive south of the mainly Catholic Philippines is home to a decades-old Muslim separatist insurgency and to extremist gangs that have declared allegiance to IS including the Abu Sayyaf and Maute groups.

"Women and children are now forced to fight together with the Maute-ISIS fighters".

The rebel alliance in Marawi is comprised of fighters from the Maute group, Abu Sayyaf, and aided by foreigners from countries that include Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, and some Middle East states.
