John Kelly backtracks after saying that he runs the country

  • White House Chief of Staff John Kelly walks with Kirstjen Nielsen the chief of staff at the Department of Homeland Security on the So

It's the same phenomenon I reported on when Russian Federation was the hot media topic - a steady flow of anonymously sourced unverifiable accusations of impending doom. "This story is totally made up by the dishonest media".

"I would believe, I think I speak for the administration, that that state simply can not have the ability to reach the homeland".

"I don't believe, and I just talked to the President, I don't think I'm being fired today", Kelly continued. Based on Trump's track record of late, these assertions are either lies or grim indictments of Kelly's ability to do his job effectively, and I'm genuinely not sure which explanation is worse for him. The Chief is doing a FANTASTIC job for me and, more importantly, for the USA! "His sense, I think - as a man who was outside of the Washington arena, a businessman, much more of a man of action, his great - I would say, his great frustration is the process that he now finds himself, because in his view the solutions are obvious". I would offer, though, it is not the best job I ever had.

"Right now we think the threat is manageable but over time if it grows beyond where it is today, well, let's hope that diplomacy works", said Kelly, a retired Marine Corps general. That was the best job I ever had.

President Donald Trump's chief of staff batted down speculation he would be the next member of the administration to go, promising Thursday he was "not quitting today" and would not be getting fired anytime soon, either.

Asked what are President Donald Trump's biggest frustrations these days, Kelly shot back, "one of his frustrations is you". But are you frustrated?

"Is this the iron hand that I brought to the staff?" the former Marine general said, with apparent sarcasm.

But on Thursday, Kelly tried to put an end to the chatter - at least for now - explaining that his job is simply "really, really hard work". "But I'm working for someone who's dedicated to serving the country in the way he's talked about for a number of years". There are incredible challenges, economic challenges, healthcare challenges, all of that, obviously worldwide challenges that have to be dealt with.

Insisting he did not mean to criticize Trump's predecessors, Kelly added, "but there are an terrible lot of things that got kicked down the road that have come home to roost now and have to be dealt with".

This is hard, hard work, John.
