Mattis: Report that Trump Wanted Tenfold Nuclear Increase 'Absolutely False' and 'Irresponsible'

  • Trump Wanted Tenfold Increase in Nuclear Arsenal, Surprising Military

Trump was responding to a news report that he had said during a meeting at the Pentagon in July that he wanted what amounted to almost a ten-fold increase in the number of United States nuclear weapons.

On a morning when President Donald Trump suggested the cancellation of NBC's broadcasting license because of stories he deemed "fake", presidential advisor Kellyanne Conway called for "a full and free press" and said she doesn't use the term "fake news".

Further, NBC reported on Wednesday, it was after that meeting officials heard Tillerson say Trump is a "moron", a comment Tillerson and the White House has denied making.

He continued, "With all of the Fake News coming out of NBC and the Networks, at what point is it appropriate to challenge their License?"

The White House has previously confirmed that Trump's tweets are official statements from the president. We won't need an increase but I want modernisation and I want total rehabilitation. "Bad for country!" Several hours later, he told pool reporters that "the way the press is able to write whatever they want to write" was "frankly disgusting". "Right now we have so many nuclear weapons I want them in flawless condition, ideal state".

"I know the capability that we have; believe me, and it is awesome, it is massive, and when they make up stories like that that's just made up", Trump said in the Oval.

NBC News first reported the "moron" comment last week, then linking it to a separate comment Trump apparently made about Afghanistan.

Trump's morning tweets came after NBC News reported that Trump purportedly told senior national security advisers during a meeting last summer that he favored what amounted to almost a tenfold increase in nuclear weapons. Comcast, which owns NBC, owns several licenses in major markets such as NY and Los Angeles.

The president's suggestion is unlikely to do much to ease his frustrations. The FCC issues broadcast licenses to stations.

On Oct. 7, Trump tweeted: "More and more people are suggesting that Republicans (and me) should be given Equal Time on T.V. when you look at the one-sided coverage?"

U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet said Trump was continuing "his effort to undermine the First Amendment and freedom of the press".

This marks the second time already this week Trump has threatened to go after a business.
