Las Vegas Gunman Shot Security Guard Before, Not After, Targeting Concertgoers

Parts of the Las Vegas strip went dark overnight for ten minutes, marking the exact moment one week ago that a gunman opened fire, killing 58 people and wounding almost 500 at an outdoor music festival.

"This individual purposely hid his actions leading up to this event, and it is hard for us to find the answers", Mr Lombardo told a news conference.

Air Force One departs Las Vegas past the broken windows on the Mandalay Bay hotel, where shooter Stephen Paddock conducted his mass shooting.

Paddock began firing on the crowd at 10:05 pm, police say, and continued for up to 11 minutes more.

"He was injured prior to the mass volley of shooting", the sheriff said during a Monday afternoon news conference.

Lombardo previously said Campos was injured after the attack started, and, according to a police timeline, the first officers arrived on Paddock's floor at 10:17 p.m.

Clark County Sheriff Joseph Lombardo said Monday that Campos was shot in the leg on 9:59 p.m. on October 1.

Charles "Sid" Heal, a retired Los Angeles County sheriff's commander and tactical expert, said the new timeline "changes the whole perspective of the shooting".

Conflicting reports following the massacre in Las Vegas last week have many Americans struggling to make sense of the bizarrely incomplete profile of the monster whom officials allege carried out the attack. "But we want to work as hard and as focused as we can on it, and help the people that are in need for recovering from this, and heal together as a community".

The open door was not in Paddock's hotel room, he said.

There is no indication that anyone other than Paddock himself fired into the crowd, said Lombardo, adding that investigators were speaking to family members and partner of the gunman, Marilou Danley. A yellow note served as proof of Paddock's intricate planning.

Federal Bureau of Investigation agents are piecing together Paddock's life in the weeks and months before the massacre, hoping to unearth an explanation.

"That's been a matter of discussion, whether what I said was accurate or not".

"Because this individual purposefully hid his actions leading up to this event, and it is hard for us to find answers for those actions".

The guard who found the shooter and helped bring the massacre to an end said, "I was just doing my job".

As the pair race towards the Mandalay Bay, where Stephen Paddock was positioned high in his deadly sniper's nest on the 32nd floor, news of the shooting begins to break on the radio.

"Every piece of information we get is one more piece to the puzzle in this case", Lombardo said.

The sheriff said that investigators plan to continue working at the Route 91 site and at Paddock's room in the Mandalay Bay for at least another week, evaluating all the electronic equipment associated with Paddock and other evidence from the scene.
