Egypt last qualified for the World Cup in 1990 but will now compete at next summer's showpiece in Russian Federation.

Congo nearly ruined the party when Arnold Bouka volleyed home to peg back the hosts after Salah's second-half opener.

Egypt scored a 95th-minute penalty to beat Congo 2-1 and so reach the World Cup for the first time in over a quarter of a century.

A scoreless first half raised the nerves in Alexandria but Salah's first of the night put one Egyptian foot in Russian Federation.

Egypt now have a four-point lead over second=placed Uganda in Group E. Their last appearance at the World Cup came in 1990, when they were drawn against England, the Republic of Ireland and the Netherlands.

Egypt haven't reached the World Cup finals since 1990, and they were in need for a victory in Alexandria to guarantee their ticket to Russian Federation.

Egypt was arguably Africa's best team during the 1990s and 2000s, despite never making the World Cup.

The celebrations nearly got too much for goalkeeper Essam El Hadary.

Their Argentina-born coach Hector Cuper had admitted the pressure to end their absence had seen him take medication for high blood pressure.

Should he play next year, Egypt goalkeeper El Hadary could become the oldest player at a World Cup ever.
