Police in NY were searching for a gunman after a shooting incident at a construction site on Manhattan's West Side on Thursday (Oct 5), in which one person was killed, USA media reports said.

Police received 911 calls of a man shot at the site around 7:10 a.m., the television station said.

Sorbara Construction foreman, Christopher Sayers, 37, was shot multiple times, at least once in the head, with a 9-millimeter semiautomatic handgun at 645 West 59th Street Wednesday morning, apparently by a recetntly fired employee.

Police initially responded to reports of an active shooter at the site, but quickly determined it was an incident of workplace violence, police said.

"When I got upstairs, I saw my foreman on the floor, which is a good friend of mine as well", construction worker Robert Pagan told WABC-TV.

"He was sacked two days ago", NYPD Deputy Chief Christopher McCormack told reporters, referring to Perry.

Co-workers described Perry as "a little insane", but would never have expected him to kill anyone.

Workers who fled when the shooting occurred piled out into the street to watch as police and firefighters arrived. He got fired two days ago.

Perry has been arrested three times in the past, according to police: twice for assault, and once for burglary. One worker said that when his wife died in 2015 - police said she set herself on fire - they all collected money for him. His last arrest was in 2005. "He told me no calmly, I gave him a hug and proceeded to go downstairs". He comes in the morning real early, drinks his coffee, smokes his cigarette, and then he went about his business. The tabloid reported that Perry also texted his brother telling him he was going to kill his boss, and tried to get rid of his pit bull the day before the shooting.
