A turn toward the north-northwest at a faster forward speed is expected later today with that motion continuing through Friday night.

The once depression, which is now churning 30 miles south of Puerto Cabezas, Nicaragua, became Tropical Storm Nate on Thursday morning, Severe Weather Team 2 meteorologist Karen Minton said.

As of Wednesday night, the system is located about 200 miles East of the border between Nicaragua and Honduras. Both places had tropical; storm warnings in effect.

In its current projected path, Tropical Depression 16 - which the Washington Post notes will likely become Tropical Storm Nate, and a hurricane shortly thereafter - will make its way into the Gulf of Mexico come Saturday morning.

Gulf Coast areas from Florida to Alabama, Mississippi and southeastern Louisiana could be at risk for damaging winds, coastal flooding, rough surf and beach erosion this weekend and into early next week, AccuWeather said.

The center is expected to approach the Yucatan coast late Friday, and could touch Mexico and eventually reach the US mainland, forecasters and officials said.

The Seminoles and Miami Hurricanes are scheduled to play Saturday at Doak Campbell Stadium in a game that was rescheduled by the ACC from September 16 due to Hurricane Irma.

Tropical Depression 16, churning over warm Caribbean water Wednesday, was poised to become Tropical Storm Nate sometime in the coming hours. Tropical storm and hurricane conditions are possible within the watch area in Mexico beginning late Friday. At this point, landfall is expected somewhere along the Florida Gulf Coast. It is expected to gain steam as it moves over the northwestern Caribbean later Thursday and into Friday.

The disturbance is now forecast by the models to move northward into the Gulf of Mexico.
