  • Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan right at a news conference after talks in Ankara

"We are on an upward and positive path in bilateral relations and regional cooperation between Iran and Turkey", which is dictated by "reality", Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Bahram Ghassemi told the ILNA news agency.

Iran and Turkey maintain that Iraq and Syria must each remain a unified country, he added.

Baghdad imposed a ban on all worldwide flights to Kurdish airports on Friday prompting an exodus of foreigners. The 7.27 percent of votes were against independence, while the null votes represented 1.21 percent.

The Turkish president stated: "In our view, the decision taken by negotiating the Mossad is in no way legitimate and acceptable", adding that Turkey considers the Kurdish referendum as illegitimate.

Both presidents drew particular attention to the regional developments in Iraq after the KRG independence referendum on September 25, both asserting that the referendum was illegitimate and null and that Iraq's territorial integrity is important for regional stability.

Besides, Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Shamkhani on Monday slammed the independence referendum by the Kurds, saying the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) adopted an "irresponsible and amateurish approach". Under presidency of two countries, fourth meeting of Turkish-Iranian high-level co-operation Council will be held.

"Paying no attention to the time and security requirements and pursuing tribal goals through this move will reduce the focus on the fight against Takfiri terrorism ... and will rapidly spread the harmful security impacts on the Kurdish region of Iraq", he said.

Iraq's neighbours Iran and Turkey strongly oppose the referendum, as both have their own Kurdish minorities and fear the vote will stoke separatist aspirations at home. "We correspond with the central government in Iraq and as far as we are concerned, this referendum is illegitimate".

The two countries launched joint-military exercises with Iraqi troops near their respective borders with the KRG-controlled territory. The drills involved armor and artillery units as well as other air units.

Khamenei accused Iran's arch foe the United States of planning to create a new Israel in the Middle East by supporting the Kurdish vote in Iraq.
