OJ Simpson's Prison Release Date Is Almost Here

  • O.J. Simpson

Simpson put nine years of prison behind him today, walking out of Nevada's Lovelock Correctional Center after completing a stint for his role in a 2007 Las Vegas robbery.

Simpson, who was acquitted in a sensational double-murder trial that gripped America two decades ago, was jailed in 2008 for armed robbery and assault with a weapon after he tried to take back sports memorabilia from dealers that he claimed was rightfully his.

He will face restrictions - including up to five years of parole supervision.

Simpson, 70, was released in the middle of the night on a weekend to avoid creating a media circus, Keast said.

Citing safety concerns, she said the plans were not being made public.

"I can tell from his voice on the phone. that he's looking forward to freedom and hugging his family on the outside", Malcolm LaVergne, Simpson's lawyer, told the Los Angeles Times in an interview conducted before the release.

Scotto said he spoke to Simplson recently and knows the former TV pitchman and actor is ready to resume his life on the outside.

However, Bondi said on "Fox and Friends" that she might have no legal way to keep Simpson out of Florida.

Via the New York Post, Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi sent a letter on Friday to the Florida Department of Corrections that urges the agency to tell Nevada that the Sunshine State doesn't want Simpson there.

"I don't have any information on where he's going", Keast said.

He is expected to remain in Nevada for the immediate future; Florida and California, where he has lived in the past, did not receive requests for transfer before his release, officials said.

Simpson will become eligible for release on Sunday, but it is not yet clear when he will be freed. In February 1997, a civil jury found Simpson liable in the wrongful death of Brown Simpson and Goldman, and he was ordered to pay $33.5 million to the victims' families. The former Buffalo Bills player will have to adhere to the conditions set by the Nevada parole board, which include banning him from consuming alcohol in large quantities or hanging out with ex-convicts or people who engage in criminal activity.

Bondi wrote a letter to the Florida Department of Corrections noting Simpson requested permission to relocate to Florida.
