The number of evacuees has risen to more than 134,000 in Bali resort island of Indonesia as a volcano could imminently erupt, a disaster agency official said on Thursday.

"It was around 11:30am, we immediately ran, we had nothing with us except the clothes we were wearing", Dauh told AFP.

Indonesian authorities are on standby to divert flights destined for the holiday island of Bali as increasingly frequent tremors from a rumbling volcano stoke fears an eruption could be imminent.

More than 122,000 people have already fled their homes in fear, many of them from within a 12km exclusion zone, since the Indonesian authorities issued the highest possible alert warning last week.

People beyond the designated Bali evacuation zone are also retreating, including many tourists, according to CNN.

"If Mount Agung erupts, I'm in charge of pressing the alarm button", said Nyoman Kasna, a local official.

One farmer said he was anxious that lava flows could destroy his house and farm.

There are reports even the animals have fled the mountain, which is what occurred last time Mount Agung erupted in 1963, killing 1000 people.

Indonesia's government has set aside a relief fund of almost $US150m, while the country's disaster agency has dispatched face masks, mattresses, blankets and tents to vulnerable areas.

"We've set a target to evacuate 20,000 more cows from the affected areas", Nugroho said.

"The island is safe except for areas around Mount Agung".

He says more than 560 volcanic earthquakes were recorded on Monday, a lot of them shallow.

Bali attracts millions of foreign visitors annually to its palm-fringed beaches and an eruption would be a blow to its tourism-dependent economy.

Kasbani, head volcanologist said: "If we look at the magnitude, it continues to increase, yesterday we also felt several quakes with the magnitude of three on the Richter scale".
