  • Abdul Qayoom Najar

Syed Imtiyaz Hussain, the Senior Superintendent of Police in Baramulla, confirmed to IANS Nazir's killing along the Line of Control (LoC) in Uri sector.

Security officials said Qayoom was killed in a gunfight near Zorawar post of Lachipora Uri in the district. The commander has been identified as 43-year-old Abdul Qayoom Najar alias Jansahib.

The police had announced a reward of rupees 10 lakhs for information leading to the arrest of Najar.

The police official said that Najar joined hands with terror outfits at the age of 16.

Kashmir police said it is a big success for forces and big blow for militant outfits, especially to Hizb ul Mujahideen.

A few days ahead of the attack, a newly formed militant group Lashkar-e-Islam had threatened mobile tower owners and mobile companies to close their businesses. He was arrested in 1992 and became an active militant again on his release in 1995.

Indian forces have finally eliminated the longest surviving terrorist of Kashmir - Qayoom Najar. He rose through the ranks of terrorists after 2003 following the killing of the then Hizbul Mujahideen Chief Commander Abdul Majid Dar, who had entered into a dialogue process with the Government of India.

"It was during his bid to infiltrate back into the Valley (on Tuesday) that he was killed".

At that time hitherto, unknown Lashkar- e-Islam posters surfaced in the town considered as the support base of Geelani.

Officers say that he kept changing his appearance and the police has reports that suggest he used wigs and moved around meekly. "As they were challenged, militants opened fire triggering a gunfight".
