But Tesla isn't completely going it alone in chip development, according to the source, and will build on top of AMD intellectual property reports cnbc.

It became evident that Tesla was interested in building their own chip when they hired chip architect Jim Keller, who has previously worked for AMD and Apple.

There's no official comment yet from either AMD or Tesla, so we'll just have to wait and see whether this development means we're still on track for snooze-driving by 2019.

Steves thinks the chip being developed in the Tesla-AMD partnership will focus on specific computing tasks, while the general processing will still be handled by Nvidia's chips. GlobalFoundries denied that report, saying it had not received any commitment from Tesla to work with any autonomous driving technology or product, according to a report from Reuters.

Green Car Reports has reached out to Tesla for comment; if the company replies, we will update this article. The 7nm-based Navi is scheduled to launch in 2019, the same year Musk promised to deliver Tesla's first-ever autonomous auto with self-driving capabilities. By partnering with a company like AMD to produce its own AI chip, that target looks increasingly achievable. What is happening is that system companies like Google, like Amazon, like Tesla, like Microsoft, are coming directly to foundries. After reports emerged of the two collaborating on self-driving technology, AMD's share price shot up almost 5 percent and continued its ascension in after hours trading.

Shares of Nvidia were down 3.4%, near 179.65, but are up 68% for the year.

A more power-efficient purpose-built chip could help Tesla get closer to delivering totally autonomous driving.

A quick check of LinkedIn shows that at least a dozen senior AMD employees joined Tesla in the first months of 2016.
