  • US Flood-Insurance Program Funds Squeezed by $8 Billion Irma Hit

Damages from Irma are expected to be large enough to put the hurricane in the league of the most expensive hurricanes ever in the USA last week, catastrophe-risk modeling from Karen Clark & Co estimated Irma-related damage in the United States at USD18 billion.

We didn't have a plan for them. But after last weekend, many Florida based agricultural producers ventured into their fields and groves after Hurricane Irma to find "oranges ripped from trees, shade houses gone, vegetable beds ruined, sugar cane flattened and power poles and lines down", according to the Palm Beach Post.

"The biggest concern is folks. rush down and then realize they don't have a home they can live in and now they need a shelter", said Roman Gastesi, the Monroe County Administrator, on Friday.

Monroe County authorities are allowing residents who evacuated the Florida Keys to return in stages as roads are cleared and bridges are inspected.

Government aid to help Keys residents recover from Irma include the establishment of six food-and-water distribution centers countywide and the installation of 100 portable restrooms at every mile marker along U.S. Highway 1. Power has been restored for at least 89%, the agency said.

There is also no functioning hospital to admit patients in the Middle or Lower Keys. Georgia, North Carolina, and SC are large cotton states where damage would impact and an already damaged market.

The bill is identical to legislation proposed in 2006 that was shot down by the Legislature after nursing home owners protested, said Brian Lee, who served as the state's Long-Term Care Ombudsman until he was ousted by Scott in 2011. "My sister got a phone call from her friend and said, 'If you don't need to, don't come home".

"The challenge, I think, for us will be. between here and Marathon", Key West City Manager Jim Scholl said.

A state spokesperson said the canoe is still being evaluated, but they've already noticed square nails, remnants of paint chips and the fact that it was likely buried and unexposed to the elements in the river. They include 27 in Florida, four in SC and three in Georgia.

“Hurricane Irma was a storm unlike anything we have seen before, and as residents across the state travel home to assess damages to their homes and businesses, we stand ready to help with any insurance issues that arise, said Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis.

Power was slowly returning to the Florida Keys less than a week after taking a direct hit from Irma.
