On the anniversary of its deadly 1985 natural disaster, Mexico City again shook with terrifying force on Tuesday, as a 7.1-magnitude temblor damaged buildings, knocked out power and caused alarm throughout the capital.

A 3.6 magnitude quake was recorded near Los Angeles overnight, according to the U.S. States Geological Survey.

No reports of injuries or damage were immediately reported.

The USGS says shaking was felt in Terre Haute and near Bloomington in Indiana, Owesboro and Paduch in Kentucky, and Effingham and Carbondale in IL. At least one large parking structure collapsed.

The quake's center was determined to be east of Mexico City in the state of Puebla.

Traffic came to a standstill as thousands of workers blocked the streets escaping their office buildings.

In the Roma neighbourhood, which was struck hard by the 1985 quake, piles of stucco and brick fallen from building facades littered the streets.

Television images showed a multi-story building in the capital with a middle floor collapsed as sirens blared and first responders rushed to the scene.

Market stall vendor Edith Lopez, 25, said she was in a taxi a few blocks away when the quake struck.

Tremors from the quake could be felt in Mexico City, about 76 miles northwest of the epicenter. Then airport in Mexico City announced a shutdown shortly after.
