In June, the Silicon Valley giant was found to have given its own online shopping service an illegal advantage in internet search results across 13 countries within the European Economic Area - including the UK.

A spokesman for Google confirmed the company had filed the appeal but said the company had no further comment to make.

The Commission is reviewing its Google Shopping decision in light of the ECJ's Intel ruling, according to Reuters.

Brussels had accused Google of giving more preference to its own services in the search results to the determinant of other price comparison sites, such as TripAdvisor and Expedia.

The EC has ordered Google to stop its anti-competitive behaviour by 28 September, or risk penalty payments of as much as 5 percent of Alphabet's average daily worldwide turnover.

European Union competition commissioner Margrethe Vestager is investigating Google in three cases, as well as tech giants Apple, Facebook and Qualcomm.

The move sets up a court battle between Brussels and the internet giant that could take years to resolve and make already tense relations between Europe and the U.S. tech giant even more fraught. "And most importantly, it denied European consumers a genuine choice of services and the full benefits of innovation".

Google has appealed a record-breaking €2.4 billion (£2.1 billion; $2.9 billion) fine from European regulators.

Regulators are also expected to levy fines in separate investigations into Google's Android mobile-phone software - possibly as soon as next month - and the AdSense advertising service.
