Rafael Nadal beats Juan Martin del Potro to reach US Open final

  • NEW YORK NY- SEPTEMBER 10 Rafael Nadal of Spain returns a shot against Kevin Anderson of South Africa during their Men's Singles finals match on Day Fourteen of the 2017 US Open at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center on September 10

"For Andrey it was his first quarter-finals, so of course he played with more mistakes than usual".

For the sixth time, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal are each a victory away from finally meeting at the U.S. Open, the only Grand Slam tournament where the rivals have never played each other. Nadal overcame the monumental threat posed by Juan Martin del Potro 4-6, 6-0, 6-3, 6-2 on Friday (Saturday in Australia) to clinch a berth in the final.

"I served so good, I hit my forehand as hard as I could and I think we played a great match and I think I deserved to win". "I feel like I just try to play each point as best as I can".

The Spaniard was second best as he lost the opening set but turned things around, at one stage winning nine games in a row on his way to a 4-6 6-0 6-3 6-2 victory.

After thundering forehands past Federer with regularity, the 28-year-old is growing in confidence even if he believes that beating Nadal will take an even better performance.

"It was an unbelievably tough match for both of us".

Nadal appeared to be in the much tougher half of the draw but has made it through to the final without facing a top-25 player and now finds 32nd-ranked Anderson standing in his way. He added: "Physically I'm not in ideal condition, but when you play in the semi-finals of a Grand Slam, anything can happen. But it will be an interesting match to play".

Del Potro boasts one of the incredibly explosive attacking games on tour, while Nadal is renowned for a terrific defensive game, where he can also switch to offence just as easily.

Although Anderson has some big-time weapons, particularly on his serve, the world No. 1 is playing, as he likes to say, with calm, clear thought and with the peace of mind that he is not dealing with any injuries.

"It was a good match", Nadal said in a post-match, on-court interview in Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Speaking after the match, a beaming Nadal said: "After a couple of years with injuries, some troubles, a very emotional time, it is unbelievable to be back, very important for me".

"I honestly was only thinking about tonight". That puts Nadal, at 31, through to his 23rd major-tournament final, and his fourth US championship match. Del Potro, who beat Nadal in an epic Rio Olympic semifinal, knocked out Federer in the quarterfinals Wednesday.

If someone had suggested in the beginning of the year that Roger Federer would win two Grand Slams and Rafael Nadal would take another (and possibly a second), we probably would have rolled our eyes.

We have to add, though, that Anderson, had no major tests before these finals.

"I tried until the very end", Federer said. "Hopefully I can get the same result on Friday".
