Hurricane Irma, one of the most powerful Atlantic storms in a decade with wind speed of 295km/h, has thrashed several smaller Caribbean islands.

The storm was named on Tuesday and became a Category 1 hurricane on Wednesday afternoon when its maximum sustained winds hit 75 miles per hour.

The storm has maximum sustained winds of 75 miles per hour and is moving west-northwest at 17 mph.

The category five hurricane is now passing over the northern Virgin Islands and will reach the USA state of Florida on Saturday or Sunday.

There were no coastal watches or warnings in effect, though forecasters warned the Leeward Islands to monitor the storm. Storms of Category 3 and above are defined as major hurricanes.

The depression is forecast to strengthen into a tropical storm within the next day or so, and it will receive the name Katia.

Meanwhile, Katia strengthened into a hurricane in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico.

French President Emmanuel Macron says he expects that victims and heavy damages will be discovered when Hurricane Irma has left the islands of Saint Martin and Saint Barthelemy in the French West Indies.

The NHC said, however, that some additional strengthening is forecast within the next 48 hours.

This is the first time in 7 years that there have been three active hurricanes in the Atlantic.

While Jose is not expected to make landfall, it's quite possible it could add to the misery on Barbuda, which was devastated by Irma.

Hurricane Jose will likely become a hurricane before the end of the week, but it's most likely to stay in the middle of the Atlantic, far from land, and Hurricane Katia will landfall in Central Mexico at the start of the weekend.

If the storm tracks over the beleaguered islands of the northern Lesser Antilles, they could face destructive winds for the second time in four days and up to 10 inches of rainfall.

So while Houston will be spared from another storm, eastern Mexico is at risk of localised flooding and potential mudslides.
