  • South Korean midfielder Son Heung-min tries to dribble past Azizbek Khaydarov and Server Djeparov of Uzbekistan during the teams&apos World Cup qualifying match at Bunyodkor Stadium in Tashkent on Sept. 5 2017

After a 0-0 draw against Iran during the final World Cup qualification match at Seoul World Cup Stadium on Thursday, Korea headed to Uzbekistan on Friday for their last shot at advancing to the World Cup.

Now, though, the successful qualification for the 2018 FIFA World Cup has the Green Falcons believing a return to past glories is on the horizon.

In Group A of Asian qualifying, South Korea, Syria, Uzbekistan and China all remain in the running for either the second automatic berth or a place in the play-offs by finishing third.

WAR-TORN Syria have incredibly qualified for the World Cup 2018 play-offs. "We want the Syrian people to be happy". As the nation descended into conflict, sports stadiums were trashed and numerous national team's players moved to Arab or Asian countries to play.

"Should we go to the World Cup just to be knocked out in the first round?" the fan added.

The South Koreans hit the woodwork twice in the first half, but endured some nervy moments in the second against Uzbekistan, who were in contention to make their first World Cup appearance.

Everything began to unravel for the Socceroos on Tuesday night when despite numerous opportunities to score, they had to rely on an 86th-minute victor from Mathew Leckie to break the deadlock after Pokklaw Anan stunned the home side four minutes earlier against the run of play.

On Thursday, they defeated Qatar 3-1 at Hang Jebat stadium in Malaysia, eliminating the rich Gulf state and 2022 World Cup hosts from the race to Russian Federation.

He further said, "The second goal for our national team!" If South Korea win this match, they will qualify in the World Cup Qualifying AFC. The team, referred to by many Syrians as the "Qasioun Eagles" after a mountain overlooking the capital Damascus, has been on an impressive run despite being forced to play all its games in other countries.

Although South Korea's elimination in the World Cup qualifying tournament wouldn't have meant immediate termination of sponsorship deals, since majority are contracted through 2019, the KFA would have had a hard time renegotiating the deals and would perhaps have had to settle for reduced amounts.

Syria play their home games 5,000 miles away from wartorn Damascus in Malaysia.

To make the World Cup, the victor will then have to beat a team from the CONCACAF confederation covering North and Central America, and the Caribbean.
