So, the team at Nissan got to work and did exactly that, delivering a more stylish angled design on the vehicle that makes air split in the front and meet at the back as far as possible from the moving Leaf. The big feature of the EV is that Nissan claims a 150 mile driving range per charge.

It has been redesigned with "a sleeker look inside and out", and will also be Nissan's first to feature its self-driving technology for single lane roads, automated parking and a new one-pedal driving system.

The Tesla Model 3 can run at least 220 miles on a single charge and starts at $35,000 (£26,850), while General Motor's Chevy Bolt - with a range of 238 miles - starts at about $38,000 (£29,150), according to the companies. Nissan said it would launch a longer, United States 200-mile rated version of the Leaf in 2019 that would be more expensive. The Nissan Leaf will be available on 2 October in Japan and will reach the rest of us by January 2018.

Nissan has also introduced several new technologies on the second-gen Leaf, including autonomous driving functionality.

Nissan on Tuesday night unveiled a brand new version of its Leaf, the best-selling electric auto in the world. More than 283,000 have been sold globally since the model went on sale in 2010. Torque has been increased 26% to 320Nm, resulting in improved acceleration.

Nissan has also extended the Leaf's autonomous functionality, with traffic queue assistance now part of Nissan's ProPilot autonomous driver technology.

One of the big talking points is the LEAF's e-Pedal, as well as extensive driver assist tech built into the vehicle (more on that below). High-power recharging is enabled through the CHAdeMO standard, the 40-kWh model getting 80 percent full in about 40 minutes. "What has been completely refreshed is the front fascia, which had been the main point of criticism for the design of the previous version of the vehicle". When activated, this technology will take control of all steering, acceleration, braking and gear selection to automatically guide the vehicle into a parking spot.

Most electric and hybrid vehicles have the option to use regenerative braking when not actively accelerating or maintaining speed, which means they decelerate more rapidly when the accelerator pedal is released than petrol or diesel-only cars, turning the excess speed into electricity to charge the battery.

In the gala rolling out event in Japan, Nissan Executive Vice President Daniele Schillaci stressed that the Leaf was superior to Tesla offerings because Nissan had decades of experience making cars, and had more expertise on safety and other convenience features for cars.
