  • Vols trail Georgia Tech at halftime

Georgia Tech leads Tennessee 28-14. I know the Vols were trying to get their passing game going, but sometimes you have to ride the hot hand.

"The resolve and resiliency of our defense, even though we gave up [535] yards rushing, we still managed to force two takeaways, and offensively, we didn't turn the football over, which was paramount to winning the football game".

Tennessee went into overtime for the second-consecutive season opener, using three rushes and an extra point by Aaron Medley to score in the first period after Georgia Tech crossed the plane on their possession to keep the game tied, 35-35.

Mistakes killed the Jackets: Georgia Tech fumbled the ball three times and lost two, and both of them were converted into touchdowns by Tennessee.

"We had numbers on the back side", Marshall said.

For all the mishaps, struggles and at times downright ugly play, the Vols found a way to win.

Looks like old times:Georgia Tech dominated the time of possession. Georgia Tech had an opportunity to tie the game, but instead Johnson opted to attempt a two-point conversion and go for the win.

But despite an alignment advantage on an option play to the right, Marshall couldn't find enough daylight to the end zone, and his desperation pitch was ruled an incomplete pass, sealing the win for Tennessee.

In the second overtime, Marshall scored on a 13-yard run, and Georgia Tech made a decision to go for the victory right there rather than a tying PAT and a potential third overtime. Saved by Callaway, he finished the evening with 20 completions in 37 attempts for 221 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions.

After trading drives to to start the first quarter, Georgia Tech capitalized on a 12-play, 86-yard drive to pull ahead, 7-0.

In the second quarter, sophomore Daniel Bituli forced the first fumble of his career to jumpstart an Orange and White scoring drive.

(1:11 - 2nd) KirVonte Benson 1 yard touchdown run.

"I don't think I've ever been in a game where you run 96 plays and have 655 yards of offense and lose", Johnson said.

Quarterback Quinten Dormady's first start for Tennessee will be remembered for the finish. The Vols were trailing 21-7 and then 28-14 in the fourth quarter.

Still, Georgia Tech had a chance to put the game away with another methodical drive and appeared ready to do just that when J.J. Even though the UT defense was torched for almost 700 yards of offense by the Yellow Jackets, Bituli was steady throughout the contest that ended with an improbable 42-41 double overtime win in front of 75,107 highly entertained fans.

Tennessee's Marquez Callaway: The Warner Robins product was targeted four times and caught all four for 115 yards and two touchdowns.

One non-conference loss on Labor Day shouldn't ruin a season, but this is a game Paul Johnson will be replaying in his sleep the rest of his born days. They really were. When you play Tennessee, your objective is simple: You're trying to limit the number of times the Pride of the Southland Band strikes up its fight song.
