Labour MPs 'to be Ordered to Vote Against Brexit Bill'

  • Peter Mandelson Pledges 'Serious, Political Trench Warfare' Against Brexit Bill

But in a message on Twitter on Monday, the European Union negotiator said he told delegates that Brexit was an "occasion to explain single market benefits in all countries, including my own", adding: "We do not want to "educate" or "teach lessons".

British Prime Minister Theresa May's official spokesperson said the United Kingdom government was keen to hold a rolling set of meetings to make quicker progress and break the current deadlock.

The Prime Minister's spokeswoman said that nothing had been formally agreed, but indicated the government was ready to "pick up the pace".

Brussels has expressed frustration at the Government's refusal to agree how much money it owes the EU. They say "Oh, well give us a count up".

While May has insisted that nothing has changed in her position since January, both her circumstances and the government's stance have shifted.

Ahead of her first cabinet meeting before the new parliamentary term, Theresa May is reported to have told aides she is determined her long-term legacy should not be defined only by Brexit. She now must contend with voters who won't forgive the economic pain that comes with leaving the bloc and are open to giving the opposition a go after seven years of Tories.

Prime Minister Theresa May has warned lawmakers that Britain could be faced with a Brexit "cliff edge" if they failed to back her European Union repeal bill, as reports suggested momentum was growing within her party to unseat her. In January, May's language was seen as uncompromising.

It has been widely rumoured that May might intercede to speak to European Union leaders directly amid fears that talks have stalled and not enough progress is being made to open discussions up to future trade and a transitional arrangement.

The major U.S. bank predicts a two in three chance the United Kingdom faces a fresh round of elections next year with a 50:50 chance of either major party winning.

The atmosphere around the talks deteriorated again today as Martin Selmayr, Jean-Claude Juncker's chief of staff, derided the historic Brexit vote as a "stupid decision".

The first argument, they explain, relates to the possibility that the Government will not be able to legislate or negotiate a quick, hard Brexit, and so will be forced to pursue a slower, softer exit process.

Even though there's some convergence between the two sides on peripheral issues related to citizens' rights and the management of the Irish border, there's virtually no movement on the financial settlement.

In a separate report, The Mail on Sunday reported that May has been advised that Britain may have to pay up to £46 billion to break the deadlock of the Brexit talks.

The schedule agreed by United Kingdom and EU Brexit negotiators dictates talks can only begin if EU leaders decide at an EU Council meeting on 19 October that "sufficient progress" has been made on divorce talks, according to the Financial Times.
