So far, there've been no fatalities on CT roads and highways.

Police agencies across Erie County will be out in force Labor Day weekend - with almost 175 extra hours of DWI patrols assigned this weekend.

Candidates must be now employed by a Virginia law enforcement organization, have at least three years of DCJS-certified law enforcement experience, and be a VCIN Level C Operator. The state police said over the last week, 15 people - including drivers, passengers, pedestrians and a 9-year-old bicyclist - have died in crashes across the Commonwealth.

Labor Day weekend traditionally results in heavy traffic volumes throughout the state. It's once again time for Operation CARE, or Crash Awareness and Reduction Efforts. "As in years past, this strikeforce campaign ensures that individuals who choose to break the law and drive under the influence will be caught and be prosecuted".

The Mackinac Bridge will be closed to vehicular traffic starting at 6:30 a.m. and lasting until noon on Labor Day. In 2016, there were eight traffic deaths, half as many as the 2015 Labor Day weekend when there were 16, the state police reported.

In addition to the DWI checkpoints and patrols, Troopers will also be watching for distracted or impaired drivers, vehicle occupants who are not properly buckled up, and drivers that are violating the Move Over Law. On average, one person is killed every 51 minutes in an alcohol-impaired driving crash.
