Wildcard Sharapova, who was playing her first grand slam in 19 months after returning from a doping ban, won the first set before succumbing 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 to 16th seed Sevastova.

No matter how much Caroline Wozniacki and others might have complained about what they saw as Sharapova's preferential treatment, there could be no doubt that the former world No 1, in the absence of Serena Williams, had been the star turn in the women's singles this year.

Sharapova began the tournament with an impressive three-set victory over world No 2 Simona Halep, but faced a player who mixed an all-court game with excellent movement to counteract the added power in her opponent's baseline hitting.

The Russian won the opening set but could not sustain the momentum and fell to a 5-7 6-4 6-2 loss.

Sevastova saved all three break points against her in that set as a dogged battle of wills developed with the Russian, one of the great fighters and screamers. The 27-year-old Latvian hit some lovely sliced backhands, played some killing drop shots and moved across the court with elegant ease. "So I know that and so I'm going to try and take it." - veteran Venus Williams after reaching her 39th grand slam quarter-final with a 6-3 3-6 6-1 win over Carla Suarez Navarro.

As for Sharapova, with the Grand Slam season over and those recent injuries undoubtedly fresh in her mind, she must decide how important the fall tournaments are.

Sharapova smacked a forehand victor to force deuce trailing 5-2 in the third set as Sevastova's nerves kicked in.

Sharapova then had a blistered right middle finger taped by a trainer and immediately broke back and held. Serving at 40-30, she was broken after three successive mistakes.

No. 16-seed Anastasija Sevastova defeats Maria Sharapova in three sets to advance to the quarterfinals of the US Open.

Maria Sharapova lost in the fourth round of the U.S. Open on Sunday.

Sevastova comes from Liepaja, the third largest city in Latvia, and her coach, Ronald Schmidt, cut a lonely figure in her box, but proudly wearing a cap that told of his admiration for her home town.

The 30-year-old Sharapova, who received a wild-card invitation to the tournament, lost by a score of 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 in the prestigious tournament to the 16th-seeded Latvian. In fact, her 6-0, 6-4 win over Garcia was her best performance since returning to the tour.

Beating Sharapova to the ball repeatedly, Sevastova exposed the deficiencies in the five-time Grand Slam champion: movement, transition game-Sharapova botched some swing volleys and is overhead averse-and an inability to adjust.

Shapovalov is ranked just N0 69 in the world but has emerged this summer as an outstanding talent.

Carreno Busta had never been past the third round here until this year and is suddenly the favorite in his half of the draw, by seed, to the reach the final.

Shapovalov was aggressive from the start. He hit more winners (54 to Carreno Busta's 25). On the key points in particular he can pull the trigger too early.
