Responsible countries take terrorists down: US Defense Secretary on Pakistan

  • US President Donald Trump

Referring to Pakistan, the president said: "I want to give message to Pakistan that we are ready for talks on multiple issues". He clarified that it was also wrong to assume that the policy recommended a purely military solution or that engagement with Pakistan had been ruled out, he added.

In a meeting with national security advisor Nasser Khan Janjua here last night, Mr Hale discussed the new USA strategy on Afghanistan and South Asia announced by President Trump.

Pakistan's National Assembly passed a resolution on Wednesday condemning U.S. President Donald Trump's accusations that Islamabad was prolonging the war in Afghanistan, denouncing them as "hostile" and "threatening".

This move is initiated by the Trump administration to change the approach of the Pakistan government towards terror groups, the State Department said that while the USA valued its cooperation with Pakistan and wanted to see it continue.

Journalists also reminded him that last week Pakistan had cancelled three high-level meetings with the United States while the country's parliament also passed a resolution describing recent USA statements on Pakistan as hostile and threatening.

Pakistan estimates there have been 70,000 Pakistani casualties in militant attacks since it joined the US war on terror after the September 11, 2001, attacks on the United States.

State Department officials said that Trump's promised changes would bring explicit conditions on military aid.

Mattis did not respond to questions on timeline, if any, for Pakistan to take action against terrorists and terrorist groups.

Successive U.S. administrations have struggled with how to deal with nuclear-armed Pakistan.

Afghanistan routinely accuses Pakistan of harbouring Taliban insurgents, while Islamabad says its enemies have found sanctuaries in Afghanistan.

Altgough the volume of annual US assistance to Pakistan at $1.1 billion, hundreds of millions of dollars are withheld every year under different restrictions imposed since 2011, when relations between the two countries began to deteriorate after Osama bin Laden's discovery in Abbottabad.
