They scored on a six play, 75-yard drive on their opening drive. And then, when USC went 3-and-out again, and Western Michigan again capitalized with a lengthy touchdown march - 84 yards in 11 plays - it was obvious nothing about Saturday's opener was business as expected for USC.

Long-snapper Jake Olson, who was born with retinoblastoma (a cancer of the retina) and had to have both of his eyes surgically removed by the age of 12, made his first career appearance for the Trojans, coming into the game to snap for the extra point.

The USC Trojans are making sure that they will have a great start. Ronald Jones II ran the ball for 16 yards for the first score of the game. Carr added 69 yards and two scores on his seven carries. In fact, Western Michigan would not stop USC again after Darnold's second pick.

USC and Western Michigan were tied 14-14 at halftime. The offensive line continuously let Sam Darnold get pressured and gave up two sacks (that's two more than a very good Penn St. defense got in the Rose Bowl), was called for several penalties, and struggled with consistency in the run game. Defensively, Western Michigan football gave up 353.6 total yards, 200.1 in passing and 153.6 in rushing per game.

According to USC's weekly game notes, the team keeps Olson from any contact in drills to prevent injury.
