  • Amit Shah Cabinet reshuffle PM Modi BRICS summit JDU RS MP RCP

Three days before Narendra Modi's third Cabinet reshuffle, Minister of State for Skill Development Rajeev Pratap Rudy resigned from the Union council of ministers.

Union Ministers Uma Bharati, Radha Mohan Singh, Giriraj Singh, Kalraj Mishra, Nirmala Sitharaman, Mahendra Nath Pandey, Faggan Singh Kulaste and Sanjiv Baliyan have offered to quit to pave way for the Cabinet reshuffle, BJP sources said.

Ahead of the reshuffle of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Cabinet, which is likely tomorrow, reports say that the 'P and N' formula is being applied for decision-making on ministers and their portfolios.

The cabinet revamp was the cards for weeks because some ministers are holding multiple portfolios adding to their burden and the fact that Modi wants to improve governance before BJP goes to fresh parliamentary polls in 2019.

He said ministers, including Dharmendra Pradhan, Piyush Goyal and Manoj Sinha, are likely to be promoted.

Republic TV has reported that Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis may get a Cabinet berth and sources said that he has agreed to the proposal. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley was also one of them, who is now also serving as the Defence Minister after Manohar Parrikar's appointment as the Chief Minister of Goa. Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu is likely shift into Environment Ministry.

AIADMK MP Thambidurai's meeting BJP chief Amit Shah on Thursday gave rise to speculation about the southern party joining the cabinet.

The reshuffle is mostly likely to see the entry of Janata Dal-United (JD-U) nominees into the ministry, with the party striking an alliance with the BJP in Bihar recently. Last month Union Urban Development Minister Venkaiah Naidu also resigned to become the vice-president.

Sengottaiyan's sudden meeting with a Union minister also fuelled rumours in Chennai that there might be a major shift in the state Cabinet in Tamil Nadu as Dinakaran has said that he was open to anyone but Palaniswami and O Panneerselvam for the post of chief minister.

Apart from Tomar and Irani, Finance minister Arun Jaitley and science and technology minister Harsh Vardhan are also in charge of additional departments.

Even at 66, the strength of council of ministers was leaner than the previous UPA and the Atal Bihari Vajpayee governments.
